Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty)

An Abdominoplasty,or Tummy Tuck, is a cosmetic procedure which improves the appearance of the abdomen through the removal of excess skin as well as the tightening of abdominal muscles.  Liposuction of neighboring sites is often performed as well.              Dr. Steven Shoen has been performing Abdominoplasty surgery for more than 23 years.  He tailors the procedure to a patient's specific needs with respect to the length and location of scars, need for muscle tightening, and the performance of liposuction.

Following surgery patients are asked to be mobile and to consume liquids frequently, to reduce the incidence of complications such as blood clot formation.   Patients are asked to wear an abdominal binder for up to two months to assist with comfort and aid heeling.  Strenuous exercise or lifting more than ten pounds should be avoided for two months following surgery.

Cigarette smoking greatly increases the risk of poor circulation to the abdominal skin.  All nicotine containing products must be stopped at least six weeks prior to surgery, and not resumed until at least three weeks after the procedure.  Even in non smokers poor circulation in abdominal skin remains a slight risk.  All attempts are made to reduce this risk by carefully determining skin tension, and preserving blood vessels serving the operative area.

The main scar of a standard Abdominoplasty is kept as low as possible so that it can be hidden beneath a two piece bathing suit. A scar is also present at the belly button. Some patients are prone to form wide scars. Dr. Shoen treats those patients with nightly scar coverage with silicone sheeting for several weeks, massage, and even steroid injections.
