What does Cosmetic Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty) entail?

Excess skin and fat (eye bags) at the upper or lower eyelids can cause eyes to have a tired or aged appearance.  Cosmetic eyelid surgery, known as a Blepharoplasty, entails the removal of excess tissue around the eye (removal of eyebags and extra skin) to restore a youthful, energetic look to the eyes and face.     Incisions are positioned so that resulting scars are hidden at existing creases.  If only fat is to be removed incisions are placed at the inside of each lower eyelid.  Other procedures designed to rejuvenate the eyes include laser resurfacing, paralytic treatments, and filler injections.   Dr. Steven Shoen often performs a Blepharoplasty Procedure in his office operating room under local anesthesia.  If needed the surgery can be carried out at a surgery center under sedation or general anesthesia.

Which patients are candidates for Cosmetic Eyelid Surgery?

Patients with excess eyelid skin or "bags" under their eyes are typically candidates for cosmetic eyelid surgery.  For some individuals excess eyelid skin may be so significant that it obstructs vision.  Patients with a history of significantly dry eyes may not be good candidates for the procedure.  In those cases Dr. Shoen often refers patients to one of his Ophthalmology colleagues to determine the severity of the patient's "Dry Eye Syndrome".

What is recovery like?

Following a Blepharoplasty patients typically note mild discomfort which is readily controlled with oral pain medicine.  Swelling and some purple discoloration of the eyelids may persist for up to ten days.  Patients are encouraged to wear sunglasses for the first two weeks to reduce glare.  Discomfort from glare may be an issue for the first two weeks, until swelling at the muscles which control squinting resolves.
